I made a circular clay box with a lid. I created this piece by making a large clay slab to make the box. I then used a bowl to make the bottom base of the box. After the clay had hardened a little bit, i put coils of clay that I made on the bowl to make it into a circular box. I then smoothed out the coils with my fingers and other tools. When making the lid of the box, I cut a circle and star out of a slab of clay.. I used a needle tool to make the star look like a starfish and put it in the center of the lid. Then I made a pearl by rolling up a ball of clay and put it on the starfish. I added texture to the lid by making swirls on it to represent the waves of the sea. I added texture to the box by adding a coral reef along the bottom edge of the box that I made, each piece of coral is different to represent the many differet types of plants and animals that live on the bottom of the sea.
My inspiration of this piece came from my family's annual outing to the beach. At the beach my family and I see many different seashells and other sea plants and animals. Also, I like to admire the beauty of coral reefs and would like to go scuba diving to see these wonders up close. I think the most successful aspect of my piece is that I added texture to the bottom edge and lid of this piece. Adding texture to this piece gave it a more realistic aspect and really made this piece stand out. I also like that the background of the box fades--its light near the top and gets darker--and the glaze fade turned out really well. If I were to make this piece again I would use a smaller bowl and make two bowls. From there I could combine the two bowls and make the more leveled. I would also make the lid bigger so it fits on the bowl. I would also make the inside parts of the lid that secure the lid in place bigger so the lid doesn't wobble around as much. I would love to sign up for Sculpture class because I really enjoy art, especially making things that are 3D. I am looking forward to Sculpture class because I really enjoyed this project and can't wait to make other things out of clay!
